Lokala Ekosystemhjälpen
Umeå municipality’s fund against Himalayan balsam — associations get paid to clear the invasive species along Umeå’s waterways.
What the fund finances
Lokala Ekosystemhjälpen collects contributions from Umeå municipality, local companies and individuals, and pays them out to associations that clear Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) — an invasive species that crowds out Umeå’s native plant and animal life. The fund is run by Umeå municipality together with Åsa Laurell (conservation officer) and local associations and companies. Areas, amounts and application windows vary by season — everything current is on the fund’s Open Collective page.
